Lord Muruga & Significance of Periya Karthigai
Lord Muruga is most popular among Tamil people. Famously referred as Thamizh Kadavul (தமிழ் கடவுள் - God of Tamils), Lord Muruga is the patron deity of the Tamil land. Like most Hindu deities, he is also known by many other names, including Senthil, Saravana, Kārtikeya (meaning "son of Krittika"), Arumugam, Shanmuga (from Sanskrit Sanmukha), Shadanana (meaning "one with six faces"), Kumāra (meaning "child or son"), Dhandapany (meaning "God who wields the weapon"), Guhan or Guruhuha (meaning "cave-dweller"), Skanda (meaning "God of war" in Sanskrit), Subrahmanya, Vēlan (meaning "wielder of the lance") and Swaminatha.
The Atharva Veda describes Kumaran. Chandogya Upanishad refers to Skanda as the "way that leads to wisdom". The Aranya Parva canto of the Mahabharata relates the legend of Kartikeya Skanda in considerable detail. Tolkappiyam தொல்காப்பியம் , possibly the most ancient of the Tamil literature mentions him as "Seyon" (சேயோன்). Other Sangam era (200 B.C. to 300 A.D.) works in Tamil that refer to Murugan in detail include the Paripaatal (பரிபாடல்), the Akananuru (அகநானூறு) and the Purananuru (புறநானூறு).
In the Bhagavad-Gita (Ch.10, Verse 24), Krishna, while explaining his omnipresence, names the most perfect being, mortal or divine, in each of several categories. While doing so, he says: "Among generals, I am Skanda, the lord of war". Lord Muruga is seen in the Gupta sculptures and in the temples of Ellora and Elephanta. Kalidasa made the birth of Kumara - the subject of his finest work and a lyrical epic, the Kumaarasambhavam.
Significance of Periya Karthigai
Karthigai Deepam, the festival of lights, is celebrated by Tamils on the full moon day of the Karthigai month (November-December) which coincides with Krithikai star. Not many of us are aware that Karthigai Deepam is one of the oldest festivals celebrated by Tamils, perhaps even before people began celebrating Deepavali and Navarathri. Unlike many other Hindu festivals, Karthigai is basically a Tamil festival and is virtually unknown in most other parts of India. One of the earliest references to the festival is found in the Akananuru, a book of poems, which dates back to the Sangam Age. The Akananuru clearly states that Karthigai is celebrated on the full moon day (pournami) of the Tamil month of Karthigai. It was one of the most important festivals (peruvizha) of the ancient Tamils. A mid-sixteenth Century inscription at the Arulalaperumal temple in Kancheepuram, refers to the festival as Thiru Karthigai Thirunal.
We must be proud about celebrating one of the oldest known traditions - the Periya Karthigai each year!
Lord Muruga and Periya Karthigai
The first day of the Thiru Karthigai Deepam is called “Periya Karthigai”. Lord Muruga was formed from the third eye of Lord Shiva as six flames in a lake “Saravana Poigai”. During Thiru Karthigai, all his six forms were united by Parvathi (his mother) and so he is celebrated as “Shanmuga” - also meaning one with six faces. Special poojas are performed for Lord Muruga on this auspicious day.
பெரிய கார்த்திகை
மாதாமாதம் வரும் கார்த்திகை மாதக்கார்த்திகை அல்லது கிருத்திகை விரதம் எனப்படும். கார்த்திகை மாதத்தில் வரும் பெரிய கார்த்திகை, கார்த்திகை தீபவிழா எனப்படும்.
கார்த்திகைக் கடவுள்
முருகப் பெருமானுக்கு உகந்த இரண்டு நட்சத்திரங்கள் - விசாக நட்சத்திரமும் கார்த்திகை நட்சத்திரமும்தான். வைகாசி மாதம் விசாக நட்சத்திரத்தன்று பிறந்தவர் ஆகையால் விசாக நட்சத்திரம் முருகக் கடவுளுக்குரியதாயிற்று.
சிவபெருமானின் நெற்றிக் கண்ணிலிருந்து ஆறு தீப்பொறிகளாகத் தோன்றிய சரவணப் பொய்கையில் குழந்தையாய் தவழ்ந்த முருகனை கார்த்திகைப் பெண்கள் எடுத்து வளர்த்ததால் கார்த்திகையும் முருகனுக்குரிய நட்சத்திரமாயிற்று.
அதிலும் விருச்சிக மாதமாகிய கார்த்திகைத் திங்களில் பெளர்ணமியோடு கூடி வரும் கார்த்திகை நட்சத்திரம் முருக வழிபாட்டிற்கேற்ற ஒன்றாகும். கார்த்திகைத் தீபத் திருநாளன்று தீபங்கள் ஏற்றி முருகனை வழிபடுவது சிறந்தது. முருகன் தலங்கள் தோறும் கார்த்திகை சிறப்புடன் நடைபெறும். முருகபக்தர்கள், ஆலயங்களில் நடைபெறும் அபிஷேக ஆராதனைகள், பூஜைகள், அர்ச்சனைகளில் பங்கு கொண்டு முருகன் அருள் பெறலாம்.
